Your eyes fly open in the morning. You find yourself gasping for breath. You heart is racing and you feeling like you want to throw up. What is happening? WHY is this happening? How do I make it stop?
Does any of this sound familiar? Maybe it doesn’t happen when you wake up. Maybe it comes on suddenly while you’re sitting at your desk or while you’re in traffic. The tightening of the stomach. The pressure on your chest. Struggling to breathe. Racing thoughts. You can’t think and you can’t focus. This is what anxiety feels like.
Anxiety looks differently for everyone. But the results are similar. It paralyzes you. For some, the anxiety may be related to a particular situation that you are struggling with. For others, it’s a more clinical issue that is medically called Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Whatever the cause, we can help you manage your anxiety so that it does not continue to negatively impact your daily life.
For most of the clients that we have worked with over the years, we’ve come to realize that anxiety can be rooted in fear, worry and/or concern related to some thing that you may be experiencing in your life. Working with our therapists, we help you to explore what may have triggered your fear, worry and/or concern and help you to either discover a solution or identify coping strategies to help you manage your symptoms.
What if you can’t figure out what is causing your anxiety?
If through our process, we cannot determine what may have triggered your anxiety symptoms, we will help you to make a list of coping strategies or coping skills that you can use when experiencing your symptoms so that you can control the impact.
What if I don’t have coping skills?
Everyone has coping skills, you just don’t realize that what you are doing is your coping skills.
What if my coping skill doesn’t work?
Usually we help you identify several different coping skills that you can use depending on where you are and what you are doing when you are triggered.
For example, have you found yourself feeling jittery and you pull up your favorite playlist. The one that soothes you or calms you down. That’s you using your coping skill.
Even though this sounds simple, for many it may be way more involved or complex. Sometimes there are a combination of situations that causing you a mixture or anxiety and depression, anger or sadness.
