As a former vocalist, many people wondered why I pursued a degree in Psychology. My answer is that as I reflect, I noticed how music, dance, meditation, and speaking to a safe person changed my life in high school when I dealt with securing my immigration status while simultaneously having to witness my father’s deportation to Venezuela. Now being a proud citizen, my personal goal is to continue learning and growing professionally in the field of psychology. The human mind is incredible in the way it protects us and how it develops coping mechanisms that keep us alive. In my practice, I am trained in several effective modalities that are chosen based on evidence-based assessment.
I understand that typical talk therapy may or may not be seen as valuable in some communities, such as my own. My personal goal is to shift the stigma on mental health and provide a space where you are encouraged to freely discuss and process your emotions. These arising emotions and feelings are okay. The struggle is making sense of it all and my goal for each individual is to put in our best effort to ensure successful outcomes. I as a Latinx person know firsthand of having to work through shame to be able to get out of survival mode, if anything sparks interest I welcome you to talk to me or someone. “Deja que la vida fluye” is one of my affirmations because life could be simple if we filled our cups at home first before filling others.
